Amatøren og de danske tourlegender m. Søren Lilholt

The amateur and the Danish tour legends with Søren Lilholt

Welcome to 2ned Magazine's seventh episode of the Tour de France program "The Amateur and the Danish Tour Legends", which is dedicated to the Danish riders who have raced and completed at least one Tour de France throughout their careers.

Today's legend is none other than the legendary Søren Lilholt, who was one of the greatest talents Danish cycling has ever seen. Unfortunately, his career was cut short when he retired at the age of just 26, but before that, Søren had a fantastic career that included many victories, four Tour de France participations, three different jerseys in the Tour and a double junior world championship.

The amateur and the Danish tour legends with Søren Lilholt

In this first part of the conversation with Søren Lilholt, we focus on his very young years on the bike, how he got started in cycling, how he suddenly started winning and filled his trophy cabinet with expensive cutlery, how he dominated the Junior World Championships, what it was like to train under the famous and infamous national coach John Struve and much more. Listen to it all right here.

Part 2
In this second part of the conversation with Søren Lilholt, we hear how Søren takes a big step forward in his career. He moves to Paris, where he is not yet a professional, but seriously begins to live like one and cycle like one. He pursues his dream, even though he does not know a word of French. As the season in Paris progresses, Søren proves to be one of the strongest on the team, and soon he finds himself on the big stage, on a new team and side by side with several of the idols that hung on the walls of Søren's childhood room.

Part 3
In this third episode, Lilholt is really in top form, both as a rider in the seasons 88 and 89, but certainly also in terms of delivering world-class anecdotes. Hear how Lilholt warmed up in the car before a legendary time trial, hear Lilholt talk about his four days in the green jersey in the Tour, and how he fought with a furious Sean Kelly to defend it, and hear how Lilholt was the first and last Dane to wear the red jersey in the Tour. Hear it all in 2ned-Magasinet. Anecdotes you don't want to miss.

Part 4
Part 3 was the record-breaking episode, and now we're just building on that record 😊. Søren continues where he left off with even more great anecdotes from the 90 and 91 seasons. In 90 he shows his class again, and with a whopping 26 top ten finishes he puts a strong emphasis on being one of the strongest riders in the field when the terrain suits him. It all culminates with the biggest win of his career in E3 Haralbeke, where he wins solo ahead of Fabio Roscioli and Adrie Van der Poel. In 91 the conditions become more difficult, the results start to fail, and Søren starts joking about a career break for the first time.

Hear about the wild season in 90, hear how a third place in the Grand Prix Cerami race ended up costing him a top position in Paris – Roubaix, hear how Lilholt looked at unwritten rules and was the first man on the Champs-Élysées, hear about the victory in E3 and hear about the frustrations in 91 when the results suddenly went against him. Hear it all right now in 2ned-Magasinet.

Really enjoy.
